Erzulie” is an immersive piece that opens into the profound depths of the ocean, presenting a serene interpretation of the Vodou Lwa, Erzulie. I used a unique layering process, using significant amounts of water with the acrylics to create translucent depths and textures that mimic the ebb and flow of aquatic environments, drawing viewers into an immersive experience.

The inspiration stems from Erzulie as a goddess of the ocean, but expands into a deeper personal and spiritual exploration. Erzulie embodies another expression of the ocean as Mother God, deeply intertwined with personal relationships to Yoruba traditions and broader shamanic relationships across global traditions, always with a focus on the natural world. Erzulie, Bosompo, Yemojah and other forms of Mother Water, Mother God are active in my world and I do my best to create them in a way that shares my experience of them with viewers.

A striking copper line traverses the abstract blue forms, serving as a powerful symbolic element. This line represents the division between the Divine and the human-created narratives about it. It visually articulates the separation humans often impose between themselves and the sacred. The choice of copper is significant, referencing its frequent use in ritual and devotional practices associated with Erzulie, further deepening the artwork's connection to its spiritual roots. This painting offers a contemplative journey into divine femininity and the elemental power of the ocean.
