today we are possible

the morning, green and laundry-sweet

opens itself and we enter

blind and mewling

Everything waits for us:

the snow kingdom

sparkling and silent

in its glacial cap

the cane fields

shining and sweet

in the sun-drenched south

as the day arrives

with all its clumsy blessings

what we will become

waits in us like an ache


A Promise of Dawn is the reminder that the sun always rises; every day there’s another promise of a tomorrow even though we may have no faith in it and can’t explain it. That the sun is rising amongst moving clouds over tidal waters adds another element of movement while holding the paradox of spiritual stillness in shifting tides.

It is an answer to the daily prayer of, “Please, just one more day. Help me make it one more day.”
